Drive: 143 km
Ride: 9 km
After a quick coffee and piece of toast, it was off for a walk around Miles. Miles is looking very sorry for itself at the moment due to the downturn in mining. Brand new hotels/motels and serviced accommodations are all vacant or closed down without ever having seen a customer/tenant. What a shame. After brekkie, we were on the road by the designated time of 10am. We were in no real hurry as Roma is only 141km from Miles and we had all day to get there.
We stopped at a truck stop somewhere between Yuleba and Wallumbilla for mornos, again the van was used to boil the water – Fischers bring their brew mugs complete with coffee, milk and sugar, and we fill it with hot water. We arrived in Roma just after midday and decided the Show Grounds was the pick of the parks for the night ($33 for a powered site and $18 for unpowered). Upon arrival, we had to ring a number and the man who answered said he would be there in 5-10 min. He then told us to park wherever we wanted. We chose sites furthest from the highway and within reasonable walking distance to the amenities.
Whilst Greg went exploring the town, Wendy did some work as we knew Carnarvon did not have any phone reception. Greg also did some grocery and drinks shopping to resupply the dwindling stock. We had already decided that we would hit the town for dinner, all we needed was a suitable location. So, we went for a bike ride to check out the various eateries and decided on the Bowls Club as it was the closest (we were walking, after all).
So, after the now traditional pre-dinner drinks we headed off the Bowls Club. Greg had a fish of some description, and Wendy had a 300g steak; both came with salad and chips. None of us were too disappointed with our meals, however, we all agreed that both Torbo and Howard pubs serve much better meals. Whilst waiting for our meals, Greg decided to buy some raffle tickets, and won a Cowboys football – yay! After completing our meals, we walked home the short way following the highway and were in bed at the usual time.
